Healthcare organizations continually seek to optimize healthcare performance. For years, this approach was a three-pronged one known as the Triple Aim, with efforts focused on improved population health, enhanced patient experience, and lower healthcare costs.
More recently, this approach has evolved to a Quadruple Aim by including a focus on improving the work life of healthcare providers. Each of these measures are impacted by decisions made at the organizational level, and organizations have increasingly turned to EBP to inform and justify these decisions.

The three overarching goals that Donald Berwick and colleagues defined in 2008 in the “Triple Aim” framework fail to acknowledge the contributions of the workforce in the healthcare system. Sikka, Morath, and Leape (2015) propose the extension of the 2008 model to appreciate the significance of physicians, nurses, and other care workers in finding meaning and joy in their service.
Besides enhancing the patient experience, refining population health, and decreasing healthcare cost, the “Quadruple Aim” adds a fourth goal of improving the work life of healthcare workers (Sikka, Morath, & Leape, 2015). The work life of care workers is also enhanced through evidence-based practice (EBP). According to Kim et al (2016), EBP might have an impact on the “Quadruple Aim” in healthcare, which improves group cohesion and job satisfaction among nurses.
Job satisfaction, which is the fourth goal introduced by Sikka, Morath, and Leape (2015) is reinforced by EBP beliefs and implementation. However, a study conducted by Kim et al found no significant correlation between EBP implementation and group attractiveness and cohesion. Nevertheless, the study that utilized the model of Advancing Research and Clinical Practice through Close Collaboration (ARCC) points that EBP beliefs among participants in a fellowship program are a primary predictor of job satisfaction and EBP implementation (Kim et al, 2016).
