It is imperative to maintain the proper staffing ratio to ensure that nurses can maintain high quality care for their patients.Studies have shown that the increasing workload of nurses can be linked to increased patient deaths, medical errors, hospital-acquired infections, longer hospital stays, and many other complications. Blanchard A leader can help the staffing ratio issue by creating a vision. With this vision, they are able to create a plan that incorporates new ideas to find solutions. Leaders are risk takers and like to challenge others to formulate ways of doing things better. Leaders like to build relationships and promote those around them and help them develop so they as well as the company can grow.

(Coonan 2007) Since leaders are not always in manager roles, they often are the ones who are working at the bedside and can help staffing ratios because they can base them on the individual needs while taking into account the training and experience of the nurse taking care of those patients. PS; i like to choose the issue of nursing shortage and nurse turnover i am working DOU. Our ratio is 3 to 1. One RN should take care of 3 patients in a 12 hour shift no matter how patient’s acuity is. It is a strict policy. The house supervisor does not care about this. Problem is, Usually there are no break nurses, no resource nurses due to nurse shortage and turn-over.

It is hard to recruit nurses too. Nurses even cannot find a time for voiding. Too much burden and too much stress, nurses resign quickly and find other jobs. I feel like resigning from my job due to the work stresses and whole body pain. If resource nurses exist in my shift, I will feel better already, and I do not mind if my workload is heavy.because I have a hope to take my breath during break time which is required by the law. Other than nurse to patient ratio, resource nurse is also a must to do for quality nursing.

Effective Approaches In Leadership And Management

The current and growing shortage of nurses is posing a real threat to the ability of hospitals, long-term care facilities, and others to provide timely access to quality care. Nurse staffing shortages and nurse turn-over contributes to the growing reduction in the number of staffed patient beds available for services, increasing costs, and rising concerns about the quality of care.

Health care organizations highly depend on nurse managers and leaders to reverse this trend. This paper discusses the reasons for nursing shortage and turn-over, different approaches to solve this issue, and my personal philosophy about this issue.

Nursing Shortage and Nurse Turn-Over

Nurse managers should encourage nurses to go for higher education and allow them to change their position to prevent nursing burnout. Nurse managers can also upgrade the technology to reduce workload of the nurses such as technologies for lifting patients (stretcher beds), lift teams, bariatric equipment, transport teams and proper training for body balance. Nursing jobs are very stressful so the managers should appreciate and award nurses for the work they do (Nevidjon & Erickson, 2001).

Increase The Supply Of Nurses

To overcome nursing shortage, nurse managers and leaders can recruit an increased number of nursing students to the nursing program. Nurse managers can organize community programs to create interest among young people towards nursing programs and offer them scholarships.

They can also arrange community outreach programs to encourage the people to know more about nursing and let them know that nursing is a good profession. Nurse managers can encourage the organization to lobby the lawmakers to permit hiring of nurses from abroad. These strategies can reduce the overall nursing shortage throughout the country by increasing the supply of nurses (Nevidjon & Erickson, 2001).Nursing Shortages and Nurse Turn-Over: Effective Approaches in Leadership and Management

Nursing shortages and nurse turn-over is a growing issue among the nursing profession. The main reason for this growing problem seems to be dissatisfaction among nurses with some aspect of their job. Nursing leaders and managers play a vital role in job satisfaction and ultimately nurse retention.Through this paper, I will identify the roles of nursing leaders and managers and examine the different approaches that each take to ensure job satisfaction among their staff and co-workers, as well as how they manage nursing shortages and nurse

Nursing Leadership

In today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment, it is important to develop strong, creative and effective nursing leaders. Leaders are those who possess certain characteristics such as motivation, commitment, autonomy, integrity, courage, initiative and the ability to handle stress (Huber, 2010). Good nursing leaders have the ability to encourage and inspire those around them to work as a team to achieve a common goal.

Effective nursing leaders are respected and admired by their co-workers. They are able to think critically, set goals and have good communication skills which make those around them want to follow their lead. “Nursing leaders do more than just delegate, dictate and direct. Leaders help others achieve their highest potential” (ANA, 2014).

Nursing Management

Just like nursing leaders, nursing managers are equally as important to the nursing profession. The role of nursing managers is not only to promote and deliver safe, quality nursing care but also to facilitate and manage the environment of the health care setting.
