Description of the Assignment:

One nursing theory will be presented as a framework to resolve a problem occurring within one of the professional areas of leadership, education, informatics, healthcare policy or advanced clinical practice. The same nursing theory selected in Assignment One may be used to resolve the identified problem.

A specific nursing theory must be used. No non-nursing theories are permitted. A category of nursing theory (grand, middle range, practice) may not be used—only a specific, published nursing theory is to be selected and applied to the issue or concern important to the profession of nursing as documented in the nursing literature.

Application Of Nursing Theory Example Paper

One of nursing fundamentals, the Transcultural Nursing theory, developed by Madeleine Leininger explained what nurses perform in the healthcare field (M. N., & N., 2016).

Caring is one of the important parts of the profession of nursing. Madeleine Leininger (2002) recognized a need for cultural awareness as an absent component to nurse’s understanding of the several disparities required in patient care to support agreement, curing and wellbeing.

When making a decision for an individual how to take care of that individual, individual culture and cultural surroundings into concern is also vital, in addition to looking at a patient as a unique individual from a physical, mental, and environmental viewpoint is an important part of assessment. One of the famous middle-range nursing theories, Madeleine Leininger’s transcultural nursing model, can be helpful to provide patient centered care which include cultural inference, language, and consideration. Her theory can be useful to nursing applications to offer valued patient care.

The plan of this paper is to describe Madeleine Leininger’s transcultural nursing theory, and the application of theory to issue or concern in detail involved with her transcultural theory, and how her theory may be useful in the nursing profession practice and improve the outcome in patient care. While family nurse practitioner (FNP) is the primary care provider to patients of all ranges of ages to recognize problems, and help to find and apply interventions to progress the health of the patients, FNP also requires recognizing and understanding cultural differences in healthcare values, beliefs and norms when working with a multicultural population. Indeed, the multicultural population in the United States creates a very important face up to nurses to provide personal and holistic care to patients and families (Jeffreys, & Zoucha, 2017). Nurses must obtain the required information and proficiency in cultural competency.

Nurses encounter many different circumstances in everyday practices especially when the patients are from different cultural backgrounds.

Transcultural nursing has turned into a solution factor in the Healthcare field and required for current nursing practice due to the increased varieties’ culture population rate in the United States (Jeffreys, & Zoucha, 2017). Additionally, the U.S. Department of State estimated that the current cultural minorities will be the cultural majorities by 2042 (Easterby et al., 2012).

Whereas the U.S. population continues to grow in a variety of populations, nurses should care about this issue. Approximately 75% of all Registered Nurses are Caucasian (Minority Nursing Statistics (2017). The growing populations with cultural varieties in the U.S., the minority nurses identify awareness to require for concern of transcultural nursing.

Cultural nursing model is measured as an excellence competency of successful caring and the safety (Doutrich, Dekker, Spuck, & Hoeksel, 2014). There are high threats and jeopardized harmful outcomes in healthcare if cultural nursing practice is not properly implemented (Doutrich, Dekker, Spuck, & Hoeksel, 2014).

There is numerous nursing literature available regarding this issue. Due to the growing varieties population in the United States, transcultural nursing care is a critical component of nursing care. Nurses should be culturally competent in their everyday nursing practice. Awareness of different cultural behavior and familiarity to identify different cultural models are essential for culturally competent nurses. 

Then a culturally competent nurse can create an individualized care plan that meets recognized targets for individual patients (Easterby et al., 2012). Furthermore, nursing care practice with a holistic approach deals with not only the physical, mental, environment, and religious desires.

It is essential to highlight that nurses are required to recognize and gather those requirements to facilitate individualized care which is set as a patient’s aspect and a right in nursing practice (Jeffreys, & Zoucha, 2017). With the purpose of providing holistic care, nurses have to also explain cultural dissimilarity in their plans of care to provide optimal care for their patients.

After identifying health issues, focus on getting rid of disparities in healthcare to make sure that individuals of different cultural backgrounds receive valuable care. Culturally competent nursing cares facilitate individual’s satisfaction and provide positive outcomes.

Application Of Selected Nursing Theory To Issue Or Concern

Knowledgeable on the individual’s cultural perspective makes it possible for the nurse to provide more valuable and proper care. Leininger (1978) established the model of transcultural nursing and built up the Culture Care Theory to clarify cultural competency. Allowing her theory to be used as reliable, holistic models which persistently contribute new research’s foundation and highly developed information to transcultural nursing (Shambley-Ebron, 2015).

Leininger (2002) pointed out nurses had to obtain thorough information of diverse cultures to facilitate care for a variety of populations. When the nurse assesses and plans the patient, the patient should involve the healthcare environment and the patient’s cultural background as a strategy. When nurses and patients work together to identify, plan, implement and evaluate for culturally fitting nursing care to provide meaningful and rewarding holistic care to individuals’ the best healthcare outcome. Leininger addressed for nurses the reason and aim of her theory is to comprehend various and worldwide culturally based care features.

In everyday practice, nurses may meet patients from many different cultures. It is not possible for nurses to know all different cultures’ values, languages, and beliefs. However, nurses can expand in turn of understanding and proficiency in cross-cultural communication which assists them to afford individualized care for their patients. For instance, since Jehovah’s Witnesses are banned from receiving administration of a blood transfusion, consider and point out that individual’s beliefs or cultural values may be a strategy resolving this situation for providing without discrepancy. Understanding of this aspect enables nurses to provide care that is customized and various cultural backgrounds.

In order to achieve cultural competency, nurses optimize their care by being involved with numerous aspects of cross-cultural communication (Ansuya, 2012). Therefore, it is essential to look at communication in which individuals from different cultural backgrounds. This engage not only oral and written communication but nonverbal signs such as eye contact touch, silence, space, distance, and healthcare belief play a very important role in reassigning communication among different cultures care (Ansuya, 2012).

Unlikely nurses will master many languages, considering these communication sign and its sense to individuals of different cultures are crucial for nurses in order to reach and preserve cultural competency. Accepting the importance of certain nonverbal communication may be especially valuable for providing culturally competent nursing care in different cultures.

For future research, recognize culturally competent nursing care to expand the awareness foundation of different cultures. Maybe the meaning of quality nursing care from different cultural points of view is one particular area to consider. For instance, mostly large healthcare systems provide a telephone interpreter service for patients seeking to improve communication, however there is limited study, access to use of a telephone interpreter service in small clinic settings.

The relationship between providing language services as a part, not extra charge for interpreting service in small health care provider settings and its outcome for future research may be implemented. Continued research should also meet points on determining if supporters and make available culturally competent care to patients in a having an important effect and satisfactory way.


In the growing global number of patients from different cultural backgrounds, transcultural nursing is crucial in everyday nursing practice. Transcultural knowledge is a most important conflict for nurses to offer personalized and holistic care depending on every patient’s cultural desires. It is the key for nurses to recognize cultural differences in health principles, values, and individualization. Nurses must be flexible, positive, interested, and actively involved to learn other cultural ways (Shambley-Ebron, 2015).

The health care system also requires transformation to eliminate disparities in healthcare to make sure diversified patient populations receive valuable care (Easterby et al., 2012). The nursing profession is the one of professionals actively participating in meetings for providing minorities healthcare involved in eliminating discrepancies. This change in the healthcare system is to guard health care values of individuals from different cultures.

This is significant for nurses to be aware of their own cultural values first, approaches, values, then carry out what they have gained from their own culture before moving to learning other cultures. For doing that, it assists nurses to eliminate personal prejudice and narrow-mindedness that may make the ability of nurses to learn and agree to different cultural values, approaches, values and put into practice in health-related matters.

Be thankful to Madeleine Leininger’s Transcultural Nursing theory that explains an individual’s cultural environment is involved in his/her health, and nurses can look at and use its awareness to create a nursing plan that will promote the individuals while being perceptive to his/her diverse environment.
