Nursing Need Theory

Virginia Henderson developed the Nursing Need Theory to identify the distinct emphasis of nursing practice. The approach emphasizes the importance of increasing the patient’s independence in order to hasten their recovery in the hospital. Henderson’s approach focuses on basic human desires and how nurses can meet them. Arif et al., (2019) describe Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory assumptions, which are: nurses care for sick people until they can care for themselves again, patients want to be healthy, nurse practitioners are ready to help, and nurses will devote themselves to the patient 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Henderson also contended that the intellect and body are inextricably linked.

Using Virginia Henderson’s basic needs theory and related principles in my practice as a Nurse Practitioner would be advantageous as I’d want to work in the medical surgical unit. As an APRN, I can apply the concept of breathing to patient care and deliver oxygen to patients who have trouble breathing. The concept of proper nutrition is essential for lifestyle disease control, weight management, cardiovascular health, tissue repair, autoimmune disorder, and patient’s overall health (Black, 2019). For example, my current patient who had suffered from type II diabetes was able to go off medication after formulating a diet plan. I will also integrate a healthy food plan into the patient care plan. It is critical to retain patients’ independence via movement and mobility. As a result, I will advise a patient to engage in low-impact exercise and flexibility exercises.

I will use communication and education in the community to educate them on primary preventive measures for avoidable illnesses (Fernandes et al., 2019). As an APRN, I believe that spiritual worship is essential to my patients’ mental and emotional well-being. As an APRN allowing my patients’ cultural and spiritual choices to impact their healthcare decision needs to be recognized and fostered as vital for the patients and families. This will make me more culturally sensitive.
