Importance of Citations

Giving credit to the sources used to create a document is important because it improves one’s reputation as an author by demonstrating that one conducted thorough research on their topic and handled their work responsibly. According to Oermann et al. (2019), citing also gives credit to the original author and their research for the ideas one found useful, which helps one avoid accidentally plagiarizing their work. Citing work is important because it provides readers with additional resources to which they can turn if they want to learn more about the topic.

I would advise the student that appropriately using citations and adding a bibliography is critical for his work since it provides the reader with the assurance that the research given to them is from trustworthy, published sources. It is also critical to avoid plagiarism by giving the original author credit for their research or ideas through citations. The student must produce an ordered reference that enables readers to investigate the results listed in the reference book further. As students, our work reflects the institution, and we are required to preserve the university’s reputation. The students who graduate with a credential reflect the university’s integrity, and it will develop a negative reputation for its alumni. All graduates and lecturers will have diminished credibility.

Citations also influence the author’s original work by supporting and reinforcing it. As a nurse, the use of citations promotes evidence-based practice, which means that any material we provide should be supported by scientific research (Brown et al., 2018). Citations, when utilized correctly, may give verifiable evidence of original ideas while also advancing an author’s position. Citations may also lend credibility and confirm the authenticity of the author’s research or thoughts by acting as a double-check. Finally, providing a comprehensive bibliography demonstrates to readers the author’s care and thoroughness, which will be appreciated.
