4.2 Communicate therapeutically with patients.

The RN to BSN program meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using nontraditional experiences for practicing nurses. These experiences come in the form of direct and indirect care experiences in which licensed nursing students engage in learning within the context of their hospital organization, specific care discipline, and local communities.

Topic: Primary Prevention/Health Promotion

Identification of Focus for Community Teaching (Topic Selection):

Healthy Diet and Lifestyle

Epidemiological Rationale for Topic (Statistics Related to Topic):

The Rehabilitation Unit at Virginia Hospital Center linked up with different health organizations and extracted statistical data from them. Data from World Health Organization (WHO) shows that approximately 50% of adults are suffering from chronic diseases such as obesity and type 2 cancer because of their diet and lifestyle fats (Stokes et al., 2018). In the United States, approximately 45% of adults are suffering from a healthy diet and lifestyle-related diseases. 37% of the population have been diagnosed with obesity, while 33% of the adults are still undiagnosed fats (Stokes et al., 2018). CDC also noted that most adults are suffering from chronic diseases because of poor diet and lifestyle.

Nursing Diagnosis:

Healthy diet and lifestyle determines an individual’s health and well-being. Most people fail to observe their diet and end up developing health-related diseases such as obesity. Lack of vitamins in the body makes the body immune weakly (Saleem, 2018). Most adults spend most of their time sitting, especially at the workplace and they have no time for exercise. People gain extra weight because of lack of exercise that helps in burning calories.

Readiness for Learning: Identify the factors that would indicate the readiness to learn for the target aggregate. Include emotional and experiential readiness to learn.

  1. Level of participation in the learning process.

Adults participating in asking and answering questions shows their readiness to learn. Adults who will share their views about obesity will show their readiness to learn (emotional factor). This is an important factor since learning is two-way traffic.

  1. Concentration

Concentration is a psychological factor since adults who are ready to learn will pay attention to what is being taught. Adults who will concentrate during the learning process are the ones who are ready to learn.

Learning Theory to Be Utilized: Explain how the theory will be applied.

The most appropriate theory for my lesson will be teach-back theory since it enhances effective communication between learners and the teacher. The simple language will be used since teaching back theory advocates for the use of simple language that learners can easily digest (Ramahlo, 2019). Teaching aids such as charts showing adults will be used to learners to grab the content easily. Such chats draw a real picture of what is being taught in the learners’ minds.

Teach-back theory also advocates for evaluation, and therefore, summative evaluation will be conducted because of the limited time. The audience will be asked to give a summary of what they have been taught. Furthermore, teaching back theory promotes personal contact and body language communication, making learning more effective.

Goal: Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) objective(s) utilized as the goal for the teaching. Include the appropriate objective number and rationale for using the selected HP2020 objective (use at least one objective from one of the 24 focus areas). If an HP2020 objective does not support your teaching, explain how your teaching applies to one of the two overarching HP2020 goals.

The appropriate objective for my teaching is number 4, which states, “Promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages” (Yingling et al., 2020). This objective supports my teaching because we will be promoting quality of life through eating a healthy diet and quality lifestyle that supports health and well-being. Also, health development is achieved through this teaching since adults will be able to enlighten others on health development matters and thus promote a healthy life. This objective will be of great significance to my teaching since they both have a common goal: to prevent and promote health and well-being.

Creativity: How was creativity applied in the teaching methods/strategies?

Creativity was applied at the beginning of the lesson, where I asked learners questions about our topic of discussion. This creativity helps me to get prior knowledge about the children’s understanding of health, diet and lifestyle.

I also applied creativity by using pictorial presentations that helped learners get the real picture of what was being taught.

Planned Evaluation of Objectives (Outcome Evaluation): Describe what you will measure for each objective and how.

  1. The choice of food they will be consuming. I will carry of research to check the type of meals adults will be consuming after the lesson. The objective will have been achieved if they will be consuming a lot of fruits and vegetables and fewer carbs.
  2.  Regular exercises. I will be paying visits to the hospital and check patients’ records. I will focus on the number of patients who have healthy diet-related problems. Consuming a healthy diet and regular exercises will help them to avoid chronic diseases and lose excess weight by burning body calories.
  3. Patient outcomes in health care. I will check the health records of patients with obesity and other lifestyle-related problems. I will be specific on adults’ records. Low patient outcomes will be a clear indicator that my objectives were achieved.
  4. Monitor signs and symptoms of diseases such as obesity in adults. Being overweight will be the main sign that I will observe.

Planned Evaluation of Goal:  Describe how and when you could evaluate the overall effectiveness of your teaching plan.

I will evaluate my teaching after 6 months by analyzing the outcomes of my objectives. For example, I will check the most purchased meals in the supermarket and groceries. If I find out that they are consuming a healthy diet and leading a healthy lifestyle, I will evaluate my teaching plan to be effective.

Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher (Process Evaluation):

At the end of the lesson, I will distribute questionnaires to the children so that they can evaluate the lesson and the teacher. This evaluation will be anonymous in that the audience will not write their names. Their questionnaires will be closed-ended, and therefore, they will answer either YES or NO.

Barriers: What are potential barriers that may arise during teaching, and how will those be handled?

Lack of concentration. The audience can fail to concentrate in class because of different reasons such as lack of interest in the topic. This can be handled by projecting different pictures that will capture their attention during the lesson. Pictures will be of different dimensions and colors.

Bad behaviors during the lesson. Adults are likely to display bad behaviors such as whispering to each other. Such behaviors will be barriers because it interrupts their concentration in class. These behaviors can be handled by discouraging those who display such behaviors. Negative reinforcement will be used in such cases.

Lack of confidence. Some adults, especially those who are obese, will not be confident enough to learn. They will fear negative comments from their peers and thus affect teaching. This will be handled by discouraging all learners from making any negative comments to others.

Therapeutic Communication

4.2 Communicate therapeutically with patients.

How will you begin your presentation and capture the interest of your audience? Describe the type of activity you will use with your audience to exhibit active listening? Describe how you applied active listening in tailoring your presentation to your audience? How will you conclude your presentation? What nonverbal communication techniques will you employ?

I will begin my presentation by greeting all my audience observing the protocol order. I will then give a vote of thanks to all of them who made it to the presentation. I will state the main objective of my presentation. Then I will share the outline of my presentation so that the audience can find it easy to understand the order of my presentation.

I will use a projector to display different pictures so that my audience can see and relate all that will be taught. Also, I will ask questions to my audience so that they can be active listeners. I will conclude by recommending different strategies that can be deployed to mitigate obesity in children. I will use body language such as facing expressions to stress certain issues.
