Assessment Description
Visit the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) website, located in the topic Resources, and review the graduate competencies. Consider your current skills, strengths, and areas that need improvement according to these competencies. How will you integrate this knowledge into developing your clinical/ practicum project?
Set four S.M.A.R.T. goals for this course: two related to time management and two related to your project (project goals must be based on QSEN competencies).
Preconference Acknowledgment Form
Assessment Description
Completion of this assignment requires the “Preconference Acknowledgement Form,” located on the Student Success Center page under the MSN-HQS tab.
A preconference will occur prior to the start of the clinical/practicum experience. This conference is intended for the learner and preceptor/mentor to review course and learner-specific learning objectives: the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of the learner and preceptor/mentor during the clinical/practicum experience.
All faculty and preceptor/mentor contact information will be given to each party by the learner. The learner will provide any course or program information that the preceptor/mentor requests. During this conference, the learner and preceptor/mentor will discuss clinical/practicum goals, including the project(s) that are to take place. Faculty will review submitted documents and approve proposed projects at this time. Faculty will also send an introductory email to preceptor/mentor.
In order to receive a passing grade in the course, all course evaluations must be completed by preceptors/ mentors and submitted by learners. All learners must submit a completed midterm and final evaluation of individual performance by the preceptor/mentor, with ratings sufficient for a passing grade. Additionally, all clinical/practicum hours must be approved by the preceptor/mentor prior to the last day of class in order to pass the course.
Learners and preceptors/mentors will attest to meeting by signing the “Preconference Acknowledgment Form” and submitting it to the instructor using the assignment dropbox in the first week of class for approval of the proposed experiences.

Topic 2 DQ 1
Discuss what emotional intelligence is and how it can be beneficial to strategic planning.
HQS 640 Topic 2 Organizational Leadership Discussion Example
Healthcare leaders need various skills, training/knowledge, and experience to succeed in their roles in healthcare settings. Healthcare leaders’ skills are multifactorial and help them implement their advanced tasks and create working relationships with other leaders, care providers, and patients. A primary leadership skill is emotional intelligence. Leaders need to regulate their emotions for effective decision-making and respectful social interactions. This paper discusses emotional intelligence and how it can benefit the strategic planning process.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions, and it involves identifying and managing the emotions of self and others (Butler, 2021). In strategic planning, leaders work with systems, individuals, and resources, and there is a need to manage self-emotions and those of others for successful planning. Emotional regulation helps employ effective leadership styles, understand change resistance, and work with employees/other leaders to address changes.
Emotional intelligence helps improve communication in healthcare communication. Employees or other leaders can fear or avoid communication with individuals they perceive as hostile or emotionally unstable. Thus, being aware of self-emotions and those of others is a crucial leadership skill. According to Nguyen et al. (2019), emotional intelligence improves a leader’s communication and thus ensures a smooth strategic planning process. Harrison (2021) hypothesized that healthcare leaders require emotional regulation/intelligence and conflict resolution to improve relationships and make effective strategic decisions.
Nursing leaders must work with many professionals and patients when executing their projects. According to Harrison (2021), emotional intelligence helps healthcare leaders formulate social-relational frameworks that help them succeed in strategic planning. Relationships are a crucial driving factor in driving performance, and many theorists have shown that leaders’ relations with their employees determine the effectiveness of collaboration, coordination, and care outcomes. Thus, emotional intelligence is an integral skill for healthcare leaders and is significant in strategic planning. All leaders should utilize it for successful strategic planning.
